Focus on Public Art Competitions As more and more communities are mandating art in public places, there are more and more competitions for these projects. I am frequently asked how the process works. Although there are many variations in the process, often they start with a “Call for Artists” called RFQ’s (request for qualifications). This contains links to images of the location, information about the goals for the art, the budget and timeline, and the requirements for submission. Finding these RFQ’a can take a lot of internet sleuthing, but once you are on several city email lists, you get links on a regular basis. The first round of the submission requires images of my completed art and information about these images, biography, and a letter of interest in the project. The RFQ’s are very specific as to size/number of images and all other details. From here, a committee reviews the submissions and selects 3-5 finalists to create specific proposals. A couple of years ago, there were about 150 artists who applied to each RFQ. Now there are often over 500 so this is definitely a numbers game. Since each application can take two or more hours to prepare, competing in this arena can take a lot of time. My project “Orange in Motion” completed in August and a current project “Cyclic Synergy” for Oklahoma State University and these type of public art projects. |
