The view from the studio is gorgeous this time of year, I hope you can come visit. See my blog at marshscott.wordpress.com for updates during the month and insights into my art studio and my work. |
Focus on Maquettes, Models, Samples and Sketches I have just finished the model for the Oklahoma State University project and it can be seen in the studio. This piece and other samples can be seen throughout the studio. Some were made into art, others are available for a commission and some are for sale. There are several ways that I convey the idea and form for a commissioned piece of art. I usually start with sketches done on the computer. I use photography for research and also for source material. If I have an image of the site or interior of the proposed piece, I will put it in place with people or plants to give scale. For my own use, I add grids and other measurements to the drawings.
I always explore many variations before sharing the sketch. For three dimensional forms I occasionally make a simple model of the form in foam core or clay to see the lighting and perspective and to work with the scale or the volume of the space. I photograph this and then compare it with my sketch and make adjustments as necessary. For two dimensional work, I sometimes photograph a sample of the texture to make the sketch a little closer to the finished artwork or I make a small sample of the texture. Samples of the actual material or one piece of a large installation can accurately show the finishes, thickness and other details. The most expensive and time consuming model to make is for one of my pierced metal sculptures. I have to complete all the computer and CAD work before cutting the metal and the finished sculpture is an exact replica the larger sculpture. Models, without piercing, can be fabricated from simulated materials. |
