Focus on
"Earthprints" In some cases I have juxtaposed these deeply textured areas with areas of mixed media using monoprinted and rice papers, metal leaf, ink, and oil glazes. The carved and textured areas of encaustic are neutral in color and alternate opaque and translucent layers, much like the strata in rock. The process of making these paintings involves making the encaustic paints, preparing the panels, layering the paint and then working the surface with heated tools. The encaustic paint is made from beeswax, damar resin, and pigment melted together. The layers are applied to sanded wood panels with brushes, palette knives and tools I have designed myself. I often loose a sense of time during this part of the process. As the layers get deeper, I start carving away at the surface, revealing patterns-painting as sculpture. To finish the paintings, I fuse the surface with heat. For inspiration, I photograph details in nature and look for related patterns and textures. I have plans to use some of these photographs as an additional reference in these artworks. As in my earlier "Walls" series, I see layers as the passage of time. " Marsh |
